Holy, Wholly, or Hoish: A Fashion Dilemma for the Modern Christian Woman

Ladies, let’s talk fashion. Yeah, I said it—fashion. Because somehow the question of “What am I wearing today?” has become its own spiritual battleground. We’re out here trying to honor God, keep it cute, and maybe not scandalize the church aunties in the process. So where do we fit in? Are we “holy,” “wholly,” or… hoish? Yes, I said it. Let’s keep it real without the judgment and dive into this.

Now, before anyone starts thinking I’m here to critique your closet, let’s be clear: this is not that. You dress how you want. This isn’t about “rules” or legalism or setting fashion police standards for believers. This is about allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out. And yes, sometimes that transformation reaches our wardrobes too. I get it, I know all the angles on the “I am not what I wear” stance. I hear you. But maybe God wants to guide us on what it looks like to represent Him through our choices—even in fashion.

So let’s get this straight: I love to dress. Most people would probably call my style “everyday trendy.” I’m all about mixing cute pieces, keeping things modern, and yes, being a little extra when the mood hits. But there’s a difference between trendy and showing everything I own. Let’s talk about that.

There’s the “holy” look: the long skirts, high necklines, the whole “I’m here to honor God, not put on a show” vibe. And let’s be real—it’s timeless. We’re talking chic, elegant, that look that says, “I know my worth, and it’s not for display.” There’s something so peaceful and powerful about a woman who’s confident without needing all eyes on her. But then we might wonder, “Am I still stylish?” Spoiler: yes, absolutely. There’s no expiration date on confidence that comes from knowing who you are in Christ.

Then, there’s the “wholly” look. This is the middle ground where a lot of us hang out, loving Jesus and loving a good outfit. We’ve got our trendy ripped jeans, maybe a cute crop with high-waisted pants, that perfect balance where we’re comfortable and classy, staying on trend without giving it all away. It’s the look that says, “Yes, I can serve looks and serve God all in one Sunday.” It’s about balance and letting your outfit reflect who you are—a woman who’s all in, yet keeps some things up to the imagination.

And then… there’s hoish. I said it, didn’t I? We all know the vibe: the super short, super tight, super low. It’s the “look at me” style that’s just, well, loud. Now, there’s no harm in any one piece of clothing, but let’s be real about the intention here. Are we dressing for ourselves, or are we dressing for validation? If we’re in it just for the likes or to turn heads, maybe it’s time to check in with our intentions. God made us for more than just catching people’s eyes—He created us to reflect Him, to shine from within, and that glow doesn’t come from what we wear.

And let me be honest—the Holy Spirit is still working on me about some articles of clothing in my closet. You know, those pieces where you look at them and think, “Girl, now that’s a freakum dress.” Yes, I have those moments too, and yes, I know I need to get rid of some things. It’s a journey, and we’re all in this together.

But here’s the thing—fashion isn’t everything. We have to determine our heart posture. Just because we’re covered doesn’t mean we’re not walking in sin. Modesty on the outside doesn’t always reflect purity on the inside, and that’s a journey we each walk with God. But hey, that’s another blog for another day.

So, where does this leave us? It leaves us free to let the Holy Spirit guide us. There’s no judgment here, no “one right way,” just an invitation to ask God, “How can I honor You in all that I do?” That includes our wardrobes. Remember, our confidence and worth are in Him, and that never goes out of style. Whether you’re holy, wholly, or steering clear of hoish, let’s dress in a way that honors who we truly are in Christ. That’s a look worth celebrating.
